What you'll need
- Step-up drill bit to expand the factory holes to 3/8" (10mm)
- Cordless drill. Don't skimp on the drill!
- Rivet nut gun: pneumatic, drill adapter or manual all work
- Rust prevention paint or primer to protect the bare metal after you expand each hole
- 5/32" hex wrench: one is included, but a backup doesn't hurt
- Permanent marker for marking holes and taking notes
Install the panels
Step 1: Drill
Use the step-up bit to expand each mounting hole to 3/8" (about 10mm). Carefully remove any metal debris from each hole, then apply primer to cover the exposed sheet metal.
Step 2: Set the rivnuts
Insert and set (crunch) a 1/4-20 rivnut in each drilled and primed hole. Carefully thread a 1/4-20 screw into each one to make sure it's properly set and the threads are clean.
Step 3: Install the panel
Hold the panel up to the door and start inserting the screws. Start every screw before you fully tighten any of them, then use the 5/32" wrench to tighten each one until the panel is secure.
